Guy is Studying at Uni and has a new job – thanks to School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES)
When Guy came into the ON-Q office in Lismore as a SLES participant, his goal was to find work and be financially independent, and his ultimate interest and passion was for art.
So his SLES consultant at ON-Q arranged a meeting with Southern Cross University’s Head Teacher of the Art Department.
Guy brought along his own artwork to show his passion and on the spot they offered him a position to complete a degree in Creative Arts!
Since enrolling, Guy has successfully gained a distinction in his Major Art Work for Drawing and is well on his way to finessing his craft and pursuing his dream.
Guy also wanted any sort of work so that he could be financially independent and move out of home so his consultant also sourced him a four-week work experience opportunity in a local art gallery which assisted to build his confidence and get a great work reference, and eventually managed to secure him steady work at a local supermarket just around the corner from his house.
For a time, ON-Q provided some on-the-job support to ensure he settled into the role, which helped him to become comfortable and confident in the workplace.
Guy is now saving to move out of home and is still enjoying his studies at Southern Cross. He is confident and looking forward to his future!
“ON-Q made it easy for me to find work and I’m really grateful”, Guy said.
CEO for ON-Q, Jason Shield, said “For anyone transitioning from school and into employment or a career pathway it can be daunting and for persons with a disability even more so. The School Leaver Employment Supports program offers assistance to school leavers with disability to become work ready, find their career goal and access support for as long as needed. We can’t wait to see where Guy’s art career takes him!”
